Berryrange Ltd designed and installed an approx. 55m long sheet pile retaining wall consisting of 91 PU32-0.5 piles to support Kingston Road in Leatherhead, Surrey.

Since the works took place within an urban area, beside roads and residential buildings, the WP150 Silent Piler was used. This piler installs sheet piles with a silent, vibration-free method which prevents disruption or damage to the local environment.

Due to the wall being positioned at the top of a slope, a unique set up for the piler was required.

The reaction stand was positioned perpendicular to the wall at the base of the slope. The piler then moved itself off of the stand to install 9 dummy piles across the slope to the top. This involved a large step up of 3.0m, in which the piler installed piles at a higher level, and with these piles securely driven the piler is then lifted by the crane to sit on the higher pile line.

The wall also consisted of a shorter section with 3m long piles where space needed to be left for a culvert. Due to this shorter section, a second reaction stand setup with the same 3m step up was required afterwards.

The top of pile level across the wall slowly increased, gradually sloping upwards, with small steps of 20mm throughout.

To finish the works off cleanly, a steel capping beam was installed on top of the steel pile wall.

Thanks to this retaining wall, the road is now securely supported and can be safely used.
