Berryrange Ltd installed a large sheet pile cofferdam on behalf of Skanska for the construction of Botanic Place, a state-of-the-art office building in Cambridge. 664 PU28-1 U shaped sheet piles ranging from 12.5m-14.0m in length were used for the project, creating approximately 400 linear metres of steel piling.

This project not only challenged with its grand scale, but required completion within a tight deadline. Furthermore, the site was located adjacent to a main road, preexisting buildings, and Cambridge University Botanic Garden. One of the preexisting buildings was located within the site itself, an old pub which was to be preserved.

To complete such a large project with a short turnaround, two WP150 Silent Pilers were used simultaneously, working in opposite directions around the cofferdam until meeting at the end to close it. A Sennebogen 653 50t Tele Crawler Crane and a Sennebogen 643 40t Tele Crawler Crane were used to pitch the piles. Due to this additional plant, a larger crew was required to operate.

The WP150 presses were selected for this project due to the site’s location in a central urban area and its proximity to preexisting buildings and roads; the silent, vibration-free nature of these pilers prevents the disruption or damage to surroundings which can be a risk with conventional methods. To allow for easier driving of the piles, the ground was initially pre-augered using a telescopic Leader Rig.

Once the cofferdam was completed, excavation could take place to facilitate the new construction.

Berryrange Ltd installed four cofferdams at Wellesbourne Sewage Treatment Works on behalf of J Coffey Group.

The works involved the design and installation of two circular and two rectangular sheet pile cofferdams to facilitate excavation for the construction of primary and final settlement tanks, an anoxic tank and an oxibox tank.
344 GU16N and GU21N sheet piles ranging from 6-10.5m in length were used for the project, creating approximately 200 linear metres of steel piling.

As the project took place within a live water treatment works with various services crossing underneath the site, the steel piles needed to be installed without the disruptive vibration or impact of more traditional, conventional piling methods.

Furthermore, the soil conditions were not ideal; beneath made ground and stiff clay, there was mudstone at depth in multiple areas. The size of the site also meant that the ground varied between the different cofferdam locations, requiring a tailored strategy for each section.

To avoid disruption to the facility, the sheet piles were installed using the WP150 pile press, which installs piles silently and vibration-free.

The use of silent piling not only allows the works to be built in a vibration sensitive area, but it also reduces the environmental impact of the works.
To overcome the adverse ground conditions, the site was pre-augered as a driving aid to ensure smooth installation of the piles by loosening the mudstone.

The project took place over the course of 7 weeks. Numerous complicated internal moves were required to manoeuvre equipment and machinery between the different cofferdam sites without disrupting or damaging any existing services.

With the steel sheet pile cofferdams installed, it’s possible to excavate within and build the new tanks, increasing the capacity of the facility and benefitting those served by the sewage treatment works in the local area.

One of our projects has been in the news this week - at Thorpeness, a village in Suffolk, rapid coastal erosion has resulted in 11 homes needing to be demolished this past winter.

We've installed approximately 140 linear metres of sheet piling alongside multiple coastal properties as retaining walls to prevent the homes from collapsing onto the beach.
